An Energy Audit is like a GPS navigation system.  You wouldn’t drive to Cleveland without a road map would you?  We employ the “House-As-A-System” mentality to understand how all the systems of your home interact with each other.  This allows us to prioritize the benefits of upgrades so you get the most bang for your buck.  Our energy auditors are certified by the Building Performance Institute.

    The very first step in our process is to sit down and talk.  We want to know “why” you called us out.  Do you have a comfort issue?  Are your utility bills too high?  Do you want to save energy?  A discussion about what to expect during an energy audit will follow and away we go!

    The visual inspection is the part where we get intimate with your house.  With camera and clipboard we get into every attic and crawlspace as well as around the interior and exterior of the house.  We’re searching for all things related to the House-As-A-System principles; insulation levels, ducting condition, air sealing opportunity and structure durability issues (to name a few).

    This is where the fun starts!  The blower door is the most important diagnostic tool in the auditing arsenal.  It fits into an exterior door opening and has a large calibrated fan.  In combination with a tool used to measure air pressure and flow, we can suck air out of the house to a specific point.This does two key things for us.  First, it gives us a number for the air leakage rate that is at the core of all of the efficiency extrapolations.

    We use the air leakage rate to determine ventilation needs, heated air retention, and as a baseline for air sealing.  Second, it helps us to find where the air leaks are.With the blower door running, you can feel the air coming from places you would never think would leak.  With some temperature difference between the outside and inside, the blower door takes thermal imaging to new heights so that we can see the air leakage.

    The best way to find air leakage is with zonal pressure testing.This testing allows us to pinpoint areas for air sealing by knowing what the pressures of these zones are relative to each other.  For example, if we know the pressure inside the house and measure the pressure in the crawlspace, we can tell how much air communication there is between the two zones.  Air communication equals air leakage.

    Thermal imaging is the practice of scanning the surfaces of the house to find differences in temperature.  These differences can help us pinpoint air leakage sites, see insulation deficiencies, and in certain cases see moisture intrusion.

    CAZ testing is one of the most important things that we do.  An efficient and comfortable house means nothing if it’s not safe to live in.  Combustion appliances are any that burn a fuel; furnace, water heater, fireplace, wood stove, or even an oven/cooktop.  When these appliances burn their respective fuels, byproducts of combustion are released (carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and water vapor).  Our focus is to determine if those byproducts are making it out of the house safely and efficiently.

    This is where it all comes together.  We use the Energy Performance Score (EPS) software (energy-performance-score.com) which is more than just a report.  This software models the energy usage of the home; it will tell us where you’re at right now, and where you could be after upgrades.  On average, the report is 16 pages long filled with recommendations and details specific to your home.
